Zelenski seeks assistance from Pope Francis

The spiritual leader of Catholics and Head of State of Vatican, Pope Francis, met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenski. Zelenski asked Pope Francis for help in releasing Ukrainian prisoners in Russia. During his European tour, Zelenski met with prominent figures in London, Paris, and Rome before heading to Vatican City next to Italy to meet with Pope Francis. A statement from the Vatican Press Office regarding the meeting stated that discussions in the Secretariat of State focused on the war situation in Ukraine, the humanitarian crisis, and how the war can be ended in a way that leads to a just and stable peace in the country. Religious matters in the country were also addressed during the meeting. Zelenski mentioned inviting the Vatican to a conference on war prisoners to be held in Canada at the end of the month. In a social media post, Zelenski expressed his trust in the Vatican’s assistance in the return of Ukrainian prisoners captured by Russia. He highlighted the main topic of the 35-minute meeting with Pope Francis being this issue. This marks the second direct meeting between Zelenski and the Pope in the span of 4 months.
