WHO Revealed: Drinking Tea Like This Can Cause Cancer

Tea is one of the most commonly consumed hot beverages. Despite being a favorite for many, tea can lead to serious health problems in addition to being a delightful drink. When not consumed correctly, tea can lead to vital health issues. Tea is a type of beverage obtained by boiling various plants’ leaves, flowers, roots, seeds, or barks. In Turkey, black tea is generally consumed. Tea is one of the beverages that is enjoyed and consumed with pleasure throughout the day. However, consuming tea incorrectly can increase the risk of serious diseases in the body. It has been revealed that especially consuming tea at the wrong temperature can lead to cancer in sensitive areas such as the larynx and esophagus. The World Health Organization (WHO), in a report published in 2016, stated that beverages consumed at temperatures exceeding 70 degrees Celsius could be carcinogenic. Studies conducted in regions where hot tea consumption is common, such as Iran and China, show that this habit increases the risk of cellular damage leading to esophageal cancer. According to a study published in 2019, individuals who consume tea at temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius and more than 700 ml per day have a significantly increased risk of esophageal cancer. Experts emphasize that even if slightly cooled, excessive hot tea can lead to cancer over time, and to prevent these risks, one should wait for the tea to cool down to 60 degrees. It is a well-known fact that black tea is widely loved. However, there are important points to consider when consuming both black tea and other herbal teas. It is essential to consume tea without sugar for the sake of health. To avoid posing a risk to health, tea should be brewed for 5-8 minutes and consumed while it is still warm. Brewing herbal teas is different. For herbal tea, boiled and cooled to 80 degrees water should be added instead of boiling water, and brewing should take place with a 3-4 minute waiting period to benefit from all its advantages.
