WHO announces: Marburg virus outbreak has ended

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the end of the Marburg virus outbreak in Tanzania. WHO announced the end of the Marburg virus outbreak in Tanzania. In his statement, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, “Good news from Tanzania, the Marburg outbreak has ended. Increased expertise in health emergency response in Africa has been crucial in effective outbreak control. We thank our colleagues who tirelessly worked to bring the outbreak under control.” The Marburg virus, belonging to the same family as Ebola, can result in death rates of up to 88% in infected individuals. The virus, transmitted from bats to humans, spreads through contact with infected individuals. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and in some cases, severe blood loss.
