What is Iron Dome? How does Iron Dome work?

2 Mins Read

In the early 2000s, during a period of intense Hezbollah and Hamas attacks, the Iron Dome was established and its operational methods have drawn curiosity. Operating since 2011, the Iron Dome is capable of intercepting most missiles, if not all. But what exactly is the Iron Dome? How does it function? The Iron Dome is a portable air defense system developed by the Israeli companies Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries. It serves as an advanced air defense system created by Israel to counter rocket or other aerial attacks from Gaza and the West Bank. In 2011, Israel completed and deployed this system to minimize the damage and casualties caused by rockets launched by Hamas and other resistance groups.

Named Iron Dome, this short-range system operates with radars and cameras. It can detect and destroy rockets and artillery shells within seconds of launch. The Iron Dome system utilizes solid-fueled “Tamir” missiles that are 3 meters long and 16 cm in diameter. The “Iron Dome” battery consists of radars, a command and control center, and three launch ramps, each equipped with 20 Tamir missiles. The manufacturer claims that Iron Dome can intercept 8 out of 10 incoming missiles.

The Iron Dome has three main components:
Detection and Tracking Radar: The radar system was built by Elta, a subsidiary of the Israeli Aerospace Industries, and the IDF.
Battle Management and Weapon Control (BMC): Built by the Israeli software company mPrest Systems for Rafael.
Missile Firing Unit: This unit launches Tamir missiles equipped with electro-optical sensors and several steering fins for high maneuverability. The missile is manufactured by Rafael.
