US Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, visited the Latin American country of El Salvador. She inspected a prison where Venezuelan refugees deported from her country are held. The American secretary also sent a threatening message to other asylum seekers in her country. The Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, visited El Salvador’s mega prison. Facing the prisoners, she threatened the refugees in her country from behind the iron bars. Noem shared images showing the iron bars where the prisoners are held on social media platform X. In her post, she mentioned visiting the prison and stated, “President Trump and I have a clear message to criminal illegal immigrants: Leave immediately! If you don’t, we will find you, arrest you, and you could find yourself in this El Salvador prison.” El Salvador officials stated that Noem’s visit aimed to strengthen diplomatic and security cooperation between the two countries. The American Secretary inspected a storage facility filled with rows of weapons and loaded magazines, as well as cells with prisoners in white uniforms with shaved heads. Among the prisoners were hundreds of Venezuelan refugees deported by US President Donald Trump. Earlier this month, Trump’s administration accused these refugees of being affiliated with Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang, deported them, and sent them to El Salvador. This operation took place despite the American judiciary stopping Trump’s deportation order. After the visit, Kristi Noem sent a threatening message to asylum seekers in her country. She shared an image on social media platform X, stating, “If you don’t leave our country, we will hunt you down, and you may eventually find yourself in an El Salvador prison.” During the visit, a new cooperation protocol was signed in line with the “Security Alliance for the Capture of Fugitives” (SAFE) between the US and El Salvador. This agreement aims to facilitate faster sharing of criminal records and data of fugitives. Officials emphasized that the cooperation between the US and El Salvador would strengthen the fight against gangs. According to human rights organizations, many more innocent refugees are at risk of being imprisoned. The White House reported that Washington paid around $6 million to El Salvador to send the Venezuelan refugees. It was announced that El Salvador would continue to detain the refugees deported from the United States in the massive facility, the largest prison in Latin America, where approximately 15,000 inmates are held, though its capacity is 40,000.
