The United States has removed the bounty offered to provide information about three senior officials, including the Deputy Minister of Interior Sirajuddin Haqqani of the Afghan interim government. Abdul Matin Kani, the spokesman for the Afghan interim Ministry of Interior, made a statement regarding the removal of the bounty offer for information leading to the capture of Deputy Minister of Interior Sirajuddin Haqqani. Kani mentioned that Sirajuddin Haqqani, Abdul Aziz Haqqani, and Yahya Haqqani are no longer listed as individuals with bounties on the website of the US Department of State. Zakir Jalali, a Department of State official, expressed that this move and the release of American prisoner George Glezmann by the Kabul administration on March 20 indicate a step towards reducing the effects of the war period between the two countries and enhancing relations. According to US media reports, the bounty initially planned to be offered but later removed for providing information leading to the capture of Sirajuddin Haqqani amounted to 10 million dollars.
HAQQANI GROUP Founded by Jalaluddin Haqqani in 1970, the Haqqani group fought against the Soviet Union that invaded Afghanistan. During the Soviet occupation of the country, the Haqqani group operated among the resistance mujahideen groups supported by the United States. However, the group later engaged in armed combat against NATO, which intervened militarily in Afghanistan, and the Afghan government. The group is known as the mastermind behind many of the bombings that occurred during this period. Joining the Taliban in 1995 after defeating rival mujahideen groups to seize the capital Kabul in 1996, the group currently stands out as one of the most important components of the Taliban. Since the death of Jalaluddin Haqqani in 2018, his son Sirajuddin Haqqani, who is now the Minister of Interior in the Taliban Interim Government, has taken his place.
