US Agriculture Secretary: Imported Eggs from Turkey and South Korea

2 Mins Read

The egg crisis continues in the United States.

US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced that they have imported eggs from Turkey and South Korea to alleviate the supply shortage caused by the bird flu outbreak leading to rising egg prices nationwide. Rollins stated that they have also discussed egg imports with other countries to address the shortage. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Rollins said, “Currently, we are importing eggs from Turkey and South Korea. Yesterday, I spoke with several other countries, and we will soon start importing from them as well. We haven’t signed any agreements yet, so I don’t want to disclose which countries they are.” Emphasizing that they are talking about “hundreds of millions” of eggs in the short term, Rollins noted that this is important enough to keep lowering prices. Rollins mentioned that they will return to domestic egg producers once the chicken population in the country increases again and the industry starts operating at full capacity.

RISE EXCEEDED 50% The recent bird flu outbreak in the US had a negative impact on egg supply nationwide. The culling of millions of chickens on farms due to the bird flu outbreak disrupted egg production and led to an increase in prices. The rise in egg prices in the country had reached 58.8% on an annual basis in February. Increasing egg imports due to the disruption in production, the US had also started purchasing from Turkey, from which it last imported eggs in January 2023.
