Following Google’s maps update, numerous images related to Ukraine’s defense infrastructure were revealed. Ukraine claimed that the locations of military positions were identified by Russian forces, leading to them filing a complaint against Google. The company decided to address the issue after facing public outrage. Mapping services often blur or publish satellite images of military facilities in various countries with low resolution. Google removed information about the locations of Ukrainian military facilities and systems from its maps. The head of the Ukrainian National Defense and Security Council’s Disinformation Combat Center, Andriy Kovalenko, stated that “Google has rectified the situation with the maps. Everything should be fine from now on.” After the update of Google’s maps, numerous images related to Ukraine’s defense infrastructure had emerged. Kiev raised concerns about recently added satellite photos on the company’s map service by meeting with Google representatives. Kovalenko emphasized that it was unacceptable for visual materials indicating the locations of military facilities to be present on the maps, even if they were from a year ago. Ukrainian authorities did not specify which facilities’ images Google potentially disclosed. Kovalenko claimed that Russian media began “actively promoting” the published images earlier this week. Mapping services, including Google Maps, often blur or publish low-resolution satellite images of military facilities in various countries.
