TÜRK-İŞ: Hunger Line Exceeds 20,000 Liras

TÜRK-İŞ calculated the hunger line as 20,432 liras and the poverty line as 66,553 liras for a family of four in October.

The results of TÜRK-İŞ’s “Hunger and Poverty Line Research,” conducted every month to reveal the living conditions of employees and determine the effects of price changes in essential commodities on the family budget, were announced for October 2024. According to the survey, the “hunger line,” representing the amount of food expenditure necessary for a healthy, balanced, and adequate diet for a family of four in October, was calculated as 20,432 liras. The “poverty line,” equivalent to the total amount of mandatory expenses for food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, health, and other similar needs, was calculated as 66,553 liras. The minimum spending required for food for a family of four living in Ankara increased by 3.03% compared to the previous month. The rate of change over the past 12 months was calculated as 49.31%, with an annual average increase reaching 68.07%. BEEF PRICES INCREASED BY 5%, LAMB PRICES BY 3%

In October, while no changes were observed in milk and yogurt prices in the dairy group, a partial increase was found in cheese prices. This month saw a 5% increase in beef prices, which had decreased slightly last month, and a 3% increase in lamb meat prices. The price of chicken meat also increased by 3% in October. The average price per kilogram of vegetables was 50 liras, and the average price per kilogram of fruit was 53 liras. The price of bread remained unchanged. Among other products, the observation was made that pasta prices had increased the most, by 7.5%. There was a 5% increase in flour prices, with no changes in the prices of rice, bulgur, and semolina. Sunflower oil showed an increase this month as well, and there was a 2.5% increase in the price of butter per kilogram. The prices of olive oil and margarine remained stable. Honey and jam prices increased by 3%, while molasses and sugar prices increased by 2%. The prices of salt and tomato paste remained steady.
