Reports suggest that the Trump administration in the US is planning to revoke the legal status of Ukrainian refugees fleeing from Russia. This decision could potentially lead to the deportation of approximately 240,000 Ukrainian refugees.
According to Reuters news agency, a senior official from the Trump administration and three familiar sources to the matter mentioned that the administration is considering revoking the legal status of about 240,000 Ukrainian refugees who fled from Russia and could potentially deport them. This move, expected to take place around April, signifies a reversal of the “warm reception” that Ukrainians received under President Joe Biden’s administration.
PLANS AROSE BEFORE TRUMP-ZELENSKY DISCUSSIONS
The plan to withdraw protections for Ukrainians started before Trump’s public discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. Sources mentioned that this is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to eliminate the legal status given to over 1.8 million migrants by the Biden administration.
HIGH CHANCES OF DEPORTATION
An email seen by Reuters suggests that migrants whose statuses are revoked could face swift deportation proceedings. Biden’s programs were part of a broader effort to deter illegal migration and create temporary legal pathways for humanitarian assistance.
ENCOMPASSING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MIGRANTS
In addition to the 240,000 Ukrainians fleeing the Russian occupation and 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, these programs also included over 70,000 Afghans fleeing the Taliban government. While Trump promised to end Biden’s programs during his candidacy, he claimed they exceeded the boundaries of US laws.
