President Trump of the United States stated that nuclear weapons are the greatest threat to humanity. Trump warned that the use of “monster” warheads could bring about the end of the world, stating that “The level of destruction is beyond anything you could imagine.”
Responsible for the world’s second-largest nuclear arsenal, US President Donald Trump spoke on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Features program.
In an interview, Trump made a striking statement, saying, “We’re spending a lot of money on nuclear weapons. It’s terrible that you have to spend so much money on something that is likely to be the end of the world.” Trump claimed that the threat of climate change is nothing compared to the risks posed by nuclear weapons and declared that a nuclear war could happen “tomorrow.” He stated, “I’ve watched Biden say that the existential threat comes from climate change. I said ‘no.’ The biggest threat is nuclear weapons, the large monsters sitting on shelves in different countries that can blow your head off miles away.”
According to a report in the English Daily Mail newspaper, it is unknown whether this reflects the government’s official position, but Trump indicated his willingness to reduce the number of nuclear weapons worldwide. Last month, Trump expressed his readiness to restart arms control negotiations with both China and Russia.
“There is no reason to produce” – the US President said at the White House: “There is no reason for us to build brand new nuclear weapons. We already have too many nuclear weapons. You can destroy the world 50 times, 100 times. We are building new nuclear weapons here, and they are building nuclear weapons. We are all, hopefully, spending too much money that we could spend on much more productive things.”
There are currently 5,177 nuclear warheads in the US, with 1,477 awaiting dismantlement, a far cry from the peak stockpile of 31,255 warheads in the late 1960s.
The disarmament process has slowed significantly since the mid-2000s. However, deciding whether the US will continue disarmament will require considering the stocks of other nuclear countries.
AT THE TOP OF THE LIST IS RUSSIA
Russia has about 5,600 nuclear weapons, making it the country with the most nuclear weapons, while China ranks third with around 350 nuclear weapons. In 2022, then-President Joe Biden approved a major strategic plan to refocus the US’s nuclear deterrence strategy on the rapid expansion of lethal warheads in China’s arsenal.
