According to British newspaper The Telegraph, US President Trump is considering withdrawing American troops from Germany. It is speculated that the troops will be relocated to Hungary, a close ally of Russia.
President Donald Trump is contemplating pulling out around 35,000 active personnel from Germany in a move that would further strain US-Europe relations. Sources close to the administration, speaking to British paper The Telegraph, stated that the President, who has repeatedly warned Europe to contribute more to defense capabilities, is growing increasingly disappointed with the continent’s “reluctance for war.” Around 160,000 active duty personnel, with a large portion based in Germany, are currently stationed outside the United States. A source close to the White House mentioned that “Trump is infuriated by Europe’s reluctance for war.” National Security spokesperson Brian Hughes stated, “While there is no specific announcement imminent, the US military always considers the repositioning of troops worldwide to best address threats to our interests.”
NO SUPPORT FROM HUNGARY TO UKRAINE According to information obtained by The Telegraph, Trump is considering shifting the troops in Germany to Hungary, which has close ties with Russia. During an emergency EU summit held in Brussels on Thursday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban vetoed a commitment to support Ukraine that was signed by all other member states. A frequent opponent of Moscow’s sanctions by the EU, Orban is allied with Russia.
FOCUSING ON THOSE INCREASING DEFENSE SPENDING It is said that Trump is considering rearranging some US troops in Europe to focus on NATO countries that have increased defense expenditures to meet financial goals. This move is part of the administration’s plans to redraw NATO engagement in favor of member states with higher defense spending. Trump has criticized NATO countries for not meeting the current 2% spending target multiple times, arguing that this inequality burdens the US unfairly.
