President Donald Trump stated they hadn’t considered stopping tariffs for negotiation talks. Promising fair and good deals with every country, Trump stated, “If we don’t, we won’t have anything to do with them.” during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in the Oval Office, Trump answered reporters’ questions on the agenda. When asked if they were open to stopping tariffs to facilitate negotiations, Trump replied, “We’re not considering that.” Trump mentioned that many countries have come to make deals with them, they will be fair deals, and in some cases, they will pay significant tariffs. Trump mentioned a very good meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe this morning, telling Abe they need to “open up their countries.” Trump expressed displeasure with Japan not buying many American agricultural products despite the US barely selling any cars to Japan, indicating a potentially additional tariff on Japan if they don’t withdraw the retaliatory 34% tariffs announced in response to China’s actions. Responding to a question about whether tariffs are a negotiation strategy or permanent, Trump said, “There could be permanent tariffs or negotiations because there are things we need beyond tariffs.” “WE WILL MAKE FAIR AND GOOD DEALS WITH EVERY COUNTRY” Trump said, “We will make fair and good deals with every country, and if we don’t, we won’t have anything to do with them.” Reiterating views that the European Union was set up to harm the US and trade, Trump pointed out a $350 billion trade deficit with the EU which would quickly vanish, one reason being they will have to buy energy from the US as they need it. He expressed that they need to buy from the US, they can, and within a week, they could eliminate $350 billion. When asked if they planned to reduce the 17% tariffs imposed on imports from Israel, Trump replied, “We’re talking about a whole new trade here. Maybe not.” mentioning they have helped Israel a lot. Netanyahu expressed plans to eliminate the trade deficit with the US swiftly, stating they would also remove trade barriers.
