2 Mins Read

The 25% customs tariff imposed by US President Trump on steel and aluminum imports has come into effect.

The decision of US President Donald Trump to implement tariffs on steel and aluminum imports in the United States has begun to be enforced. This decision was made at a time when concerns were raised about the possibility of causing stagnation in the US economy. In addition to these tariffs, Trump, who applied separate tariffs to Canada, Mexico, and China, plans to introduce reciprocal taxes to trading partners like the European Union (EU), Brazil, and South Korea from April 2nd. During a meeting with leading business figures yesterday, Trump argued that the higher the tariff, the more likely companies are to invest in the United States. Despite an 8% drop in the S&P 500 index in the past month, Trump stated, “The biggest benefit for our country is when businesses come here to produce. This is a gain greater than the tariffs themselves, but tariffs will also make a lot of money for this country.” TWO NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES HAD ADDITIONAL TARIFFS IMPOSED The 25% additional customs duty on products imported from Canada and Mexico began on March 4th. Trump later announced that they would not impose customs duties until April 2nd on products covered by the “US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)” for those countries. US President Donald Trump had announced that the additional tariffs on the country’s steel and aluminum imports would go into effect on March 12th.
