Following a major devastation in Malatya after the earthquake, trout production has started to recover. This year, production exceeded 6,000 tons, with a production target set at 13,000 tons. The earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, centered in Kahramanmaraş, caused extensive damage in Malatya, leading to a decrease in trout and trout fry production after the disaster. However, with the support of the government, the production has been increasing. The production, which had reached 9,000 tons of trout and 52 million trout fry in the city, dropped after the earthquakes that were described as “the disaster of the century.” Due to the damage suffered by 22 facilities in the city because of the earthquakes, the trout production, which was around 4,000 tons last year, increased to 6,280 tons in the first 9 months of this year, thanks to government support for producers. After the earthquakes, production in the region had dropped to 4,000 tons. Osman Akar, the Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, stated that they aimed to increase the production to 13,000 tons with the start of production in Boztepe and Kapıkaya dams. Akar mentioned that a support of 1.80 Turkish Liras per kilogram was provided for trout production. He also noted that a total of 13.5 million lira in support was provided to the producers affected by the earthquake.
