Spokesperson for the European Union (EU) Commission, Olof Gill, stated that they are prepared for a possible response from the US to the measures taken by the EU against the steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the US. Gill, during a daily press conference held in Brussels, commented on statements by US President Donald Trump regarding retaliating with additional tariffs if the EU implements tariffs against the US. Emphasizing that the EU is prepared for a potential response from the US to their countermeasures, Gill said, “Yes, we are prepared for anything that may come from the US. We have been preparing for over a year.” Gill expressed deep concern over the 25% tariffs that the US initiated on steel and aluminum imports yesterday, stating, “We call on the US to immediately cancel the tariffs imposed.” Mentioning that they want to negotiate with the US to prevent tariffs, Gill reiterated that they are ready for the possible consequences of the decision made by the US yesterday. The 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports by the US came into effect on March 12. Following the US’s decision to begin additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, the EU announced that countermeasures amounting to 26 billion euros would be implemented. The EU also published a list of US products that could be subjected to retaliatory customs duties. The 99-page product list includes items such as meat, chicken, turkey, milk and cream, nuts, coffee, fruits and vegetables, alcoholic beverages, chewing gum, e-cigarettes, American lifestyle-associated whiskey, clothing, hand tools, machinery, and motorcycles.
