A tourist who climbed unauthorized to the Kukulkan Temple in Chichen Itza, recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World in Mexico, was first attacked by locals and then arrested. Climbing the famous Kukulkan Temple in Chichen Itza, located in the Yucatan state of Mexico, without permission, led to the arrest of a German tourist after facing the locals’ reaction. The incident took place on Thursday, March 20, with the moment the tourist climbed the temple wall captured by Sky News and Daily Mail. Witnesses reported that the local people showed their disapproval towards the tourist and hurled insults. A security guard quickly climbed the temple to intervene with the tourist. The Mexican National Guard arrived at the scene and detained the tourist. However, footage also showed some angry citizens attacking the tourist. According to Mexico News Daily, there were between 8,000 and 9,000 visitors at the site during the incident. While Chichen Itza is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Chichen Itza officials stated that climbing the pyramid is prohibited and unauthorized climbs in the past have caused significant damage to the structure. Under Mexico’s Federal Law on Monuments and Archaeological Sites, individuals caught climbing the pyramid can face fines ranging from $3,200 to $16,000. Depending on the extent of the damage, imprisonment can also be imposed. Tourists causing damage to historical sites are facing criticism worldwide. In November, an American tourist was arrested in Japan for allegedly damaging the entrance of the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo’s Shibuya district by carving letters into the wooden pillar. Authorities reiterated the importance of visitors complying with rules for the preservation of historical heritage.
