In Hatay, tomatoes grown in greenhouses by farmers are being sold for 28 TL. The producer is upset with the price of tomatoes doubling to reach 60 TL per kilogram in the market. Hatay, with some of the most fertile lands in Turkey, sees farmers continuing to grow their products in greenhouses in March. Despite recent frost affecting most farmers negatively, those whose crops were unharmed are now harvesting their products. Harvesting of tomatoes produced in the region and sent to various parts of Turkey continues. Following the frost disaster, the price per kilogram of tomatoes in the field finds buyers at 28 TL. Ruhi Yapıcı, who harvests tomatoes in a greenhouse in the Tekebaşı neighborhood of Samandağ district, pointed out the difference between field and market prices for tomatoes, stating that consumers and producers are negatively affected by this situation. Noting that the price difference between market and field prices is twice as high, farmer Ruhi Yapıcı said, “The field price of tomatoes is currently between 28 TL and 30 TL. I am satisfied with the price if I can sell my product in the field. When I look at the shelves, I see that tomato prices in Istanbul reach up to 100 TL. Without going too far, looking at the shelves in Hatay, the price per kilogram of tomatoes is around 60 TL. In these conditions, it is the farmers who suffer losses, this is our hard work. About 20 days ago, we experienced a frost disaster, and we struggled with it. The consumer is even more disadvantaged in this situation. The ones suffering here are the producers and consumers, not the merchants. Prices are 28 TL in the fields and 60 TL in markets, and this situation reflects on the consumers. The consumer ends up purchasing half the amount they originally intended.”
