The United States government confirmed that they have engaged in direct talks with Hamas. White House Spokesperson Leavitt confirmed the talks, saying, “The special envoy conducting these negotiations has the authority to speak with everyone, and Israel was consulted on this matter.” American media had previously claimed that the United States was engaging in direct talks with Hamas for the release of Israeli captives and a broader agreement.
During a press briefing, White House Spokesperson Leavitt confirmed the allegation of direct talks with Hamas in order to rescue American captives held by Hamas.
Leavitt stated, “The special envoy conducting these negotiations has the authority to speak with everyone, and Israel was consulted on this matter. These are ongoing discussions, so I will not go into details at this time. The lives of Americans are at stake.” The White House spokesperson noted that they engage in many meetings around the world in line with the interests of the country and strive to do what is right for the American people. There are reports in the American media about direct talks.
An Axios report based on two informed sources claimed that the United States had directly contacted Hamas for the first time. According to sources speaking to Axios, the discussions were conducted by U.S. Special Representative for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler, who had met with Hamas officials in Doha, Qatar, in previous weeks. The main focus of the talks was said to be the release of Israeli-American dual citizens and the possibility of a more comprehensive agreement for the release of all captives and a long-term ceasefire. Sources also mentioned that the Trump administration had consulted with Israel on communicating with Hamas but was informed through different channels. It was emphasized that no agreement was reached in the talks. There are an estimated 59 Israeli captives in Gaza, including five who are American citizens.
MOVING TO THE SECOND STAGE
If Hamas agrees with Israel on the release of the remaining captives, they will hand over the surviving hostages.
Israel will also release more Palestinian prisoners. Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip will fully withdraw. Following the second stage, Hamas will hand over the lifeless bodies of deceased captives to Israel.
