The Move that Made a Mark on the UN: Haiti’s President’s Memorable Incident

September 27, 20242 Mins Read

Haiti’s President Edgard Leblanc Fils became an internet phenomenon after experiencing a humorous mishap during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. The Haitian leader was at the UN podium to call for help to combat gang violence and mass migration in his country. During his speech, Fils attempted to drink water from a large pitcher. However, instead of pouring the water from the pitcher into a glass, he tried to drink directly from the pitcher and ended up spilling water on himself. The moments captured on video quickly spread on social media, becoming the subject of various jokes.

“NO GLASSES IN HAITI?” Comments such as “Don’t they have glasses in Haiti?” were made on the video where Fils spilled water on his hands and clothes, accompanied by humorous remarks. Some users defended the president, who became the focus of jokes, by saying, “It might be normal for him. I usually drink water from a pitcher too.”

RESPONDING TO TRUMP’S CLAIMS President Leblanc Fils also responded to former US President Donald Trump’s recent claims that “Haitian immigrants are eating their pets” during his UN speech. Leblanc Fils, stating that such remarks could harm Haitians globally, called for solidarity from US citizens living in America.
