The Era of Horses and Mules in War: Russia Using Latest Weapons in Ukraine

2 Mins Read

In the warfare where high technologies compete, Russia has begun to use horses and mules on the eastern front. These animals, which were the basis of warfare centuries ago, carry supplies and troops to avoid drawing the attention of Ukraine’s unmanned aerial vehicles. Russia turned to the basic foundations of old battlefields to counter Ukraine’s drone army on the eastern front.

The Russian army, which has started to use horses and mules, is carrying supplies and soldiers with these animals to avoid attracting the attention of unmanned aerial vehicles that can easily detect and target armored and other vehicles moving close to the front. Technological advancements that have turned UAVs into extremely effective weapons, as reported by the American Wall Street Journal (WSJ), have forced both sides to quickly adapt.

Some solutions involve advanced equipment aiming to shoot down drones such as lasers or electronic jammers. Others range from shotguns to vehicle-mounted crude mesh shields designed to launch them out of the sky. Ukrainian Army Sergeant Ihor Vizirenko saw the Russians on horseback for the first time in drone footage.

Speaking to WSJ, Vizirenko commented, “The Russians are quite creative. Nowadays, warfare consists of drones and artillery. As soon as their vehicles approach the front, Ukrainians destroy them.” Vizirenko’s unit similarly uses hand carts to transport wood, materials, and even casualties for miles to the front lines.

They use hand carts similar to those used for small loads in warehouses and offices to keep vehicles away from the range of Russian drones, aiming to help protect them.
