2 Mins Read

Results of a survey conducted in Israel show that 60% of the population believes there is a real risk of a civil war breaking out in the country. As Israeli attacks on the occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Syria continue, a new public opinion poll in Israel revealed that 60% of participants think a civil war could erupt in the country. According to The Jerusalem Post, the “Israel Social Index” survey conducted by the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI) showed that 60% of the public believes that a civil war in Israel is a genuine danger. The survey, whose results were published on Thursday, April 3, asked participants about former Chief Justice of the Israel Supreme Court Aharon Barak’s statement that “Israel is very close to a civil war.” While 27% of the participants agreed with this statement, 33% believed that Barak used an exaggerated expression but still acknowledged the real risk of a civil war. Those who denied such a risk stood at 16%. IS THERE A “DEEP STATE” IN ISRAEL? Survey participants were also asked about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial attempt to dismiss the head of internal intelligence Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, and the Supreme Court’s intervention in the matter. While 51% of participants opposed the court’s intervention, 38% said that Bar’s dismissal should be annulled by the Supreme Court. Participants also responded to a question about the existence of a “deep state” in the country. According to the results, two-fifths of the participants believe that Netanyahu, who claims there is a “deep state,” is mistaken, while one-fifth think he is exaggerating. 79% of far-right participants agree with the statement about a “deep state,” while among those who think Netanyahu is mistaken, the percentage is 78% among leftists, 76% among center-left voters, and 61% among participants in the political center.
