South Korea: Military aircraft accidentally bombs village during exercise, 7 people injured

The South Korean Air Force announced that during an exercise, 8 MK-82 bombs accidentally dropped from a KF-16 fighter jet hit a residential area, stating, “We are sorry for the incident.” An investigation has been launched into the accident, which resulted in the injury of 7 people, 4 of them seriously, and caused damage to numerous buildings. In the aftermath of the incident where a rural settlement area belonging to the Pocheon city in Gyeonggi Province in South Korea was hit by bombs, it was revealed that the event was the result of an accident. In a statement from the South Korean Air Force, it was mentioned that a joint live-fire exercise was carried out with the United States in the area, and it was noted that “around 10.04 today, 8 MK-82 bombs dropped from a South Korean Air Force KF-16 fighter jet in an abnormal way, falling outside the exercise area.” The statement expressed regret for the damage caused by the accident and wished the injured a speedy recovery, mentioning that necessary measures, including compensation for the damage, will be actively taken. Local fire officials reported that 7 residents living in the rural settlement area targeted by the bombs were injured. While 4 of the injured are in critical condition, it was also stated that 1 church and 6 buildings were damaged. Reports in the South Korean media highlighted that the free-falling MK-82 bomb, which hit the area accidentally, is an effective weapon of destruction, suggesting that the incident was narrowly avoided.
