During his visit to Washington to meet with American officials, the President of the Russian National Wealth Fund, Dmitriev, indicated that dialogues between the two countries could continue into next week.
Kirill Dmitriev, the President of the Russian National Wealth Fund and Russia’s special representative for foreign investment and economic cooperation, evaluated the US-Russia relations in a statement to the Russian state media. Dmitriev, who visited the US on April 3, stated that talks between Moscow and Washington could continue “as early as next week.” Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Dmitriev reported discussions with representatives of US President Donald Trump in Washington, stating that the two sides had “made progress on a wide range of issues.” Dmitriev mentioned that the topics they covered included bilateral relations, cooperation in the business sector, and the conflict in Ukraine.
Responding to questions from Channel One, Dmitriev hinted at the possibility of new contacts between Russia and the US when he said, “As early as next week.” The Russian official, who also mentioned receiving numerous requests from American companies, including in the energy sector, to return to Russia, described their discussions during the week as the “beginning of a good and respectful dialogue,” but he argued that there are still many individuals in the US government who are hostile towards Russia.
Continuing his comments with references to these “enemies,” Dmitriev stated, “They have not gone anywhere. The so-called deep state is still there. Many countries are also trying to obstruct attempts at dialogue and efforts to repair relations between Russia and the US.” Emphasizing the “fragile hope” of restoring dialogue, the Russian official noted the need to resist efforts to undermine the strengthening of ties.
Russo-Ukrainian conflict erupted following the beginning of Donald Trump’s second term as President of the US in January 2025, and the first high-level official meeting between the two countries occurred between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his American counterpart Marco Rubio. Lavrov, Rubio, and their delegations met in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, on February 18. Rubio had mentioned, “If the conflict in Ukraine ends, extraordinary opportunities will arise for US-Russia relations.” During this period, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin also had a phone conversation. Trump announced their phone call on February 12, and the two leaders had another conversation on March 18 that reportedly lasted 2.5 hours, where details of the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire were discussed. Despite both countries agreeing to cease attacks on energy infrastructures through US intervention, they continue to accuse each other of violating the agreement.
