2 Mins Read

Severe rainfall affected Italy’s northern regions, leading to flooding, inundations, and water logging in many settlements, resulting in the loss of one life due to flooding. The intense rainfall in the northern region of Italy caused flooding and water logging, with 30 people trapped being rescued by teams. Reports in the national press mentioned numerous floods in the Liguria and Tuscany regions in the northwest, with landslides also occurring in some high-altitude areas. It was noted that Liguria received 200 millimeters of rain over 18 hours on October 16, while some areas in Tuscany experienced 100 millimeters of rainfall in just an hour, adversely impacting settlements close to water sources, such as the cities of Genoa, Rapallo, Savona, and Chiavari in Liguria, and Livorno and Siena in Tuscany. A red alert was issued due to the flood risk of the Entella and Magra rivers in the Liguria region. It was reported that a 75-year-old person lost their life while hiking in a forest area near Genoa during the rain. The media and social networks also captured images resembling waterfalls from the floodwaters flowing from the Sori Bridge in Genoa. The railway tracks at the train station in Siena were observed to be covered with water as a result of the rains. Damage to tram lines due to excessive rainfall was also reported in Florence. In some cities in Liguria and Tuscany where floods and inundations occurred, primary and secondary schools suspended classes for the day. The Prime Minister’s Civil Protection Department also warned citizens to be cautious and avoid moving due to the adverse weather conditions in these two regions.
