Sentences handed down for activists who threw soup on Van Gogh painting

September 27, 20241 Mins Read

In London, the capital of England, two climate activists who threw soup at Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” painting were sentenced to prison for criminal damage. Phoebe Plummer, 23, and Anna Holland, 22, caused damage to the frame by throwing tomato soup cans onto the artwork. However, the painting remained undamaged and was later re-displayed at the exhibition.

Wearing t-shirts with “Just Stop Oil” written on them, the protesters glued their hands to the wall under the painting after throwing tomato soup at Van Gogh’s 1888 painting “Sunflowers”. The duo claimed they were innocent, but they were found guilty following the trial at the Southwark Crown Court in London. Plummer was sentenced to two years in prison for criminal damage, while Holland received a 20-month prison sentence.
