In Poland, a 2,500-year-old dagger was found by chance on the beach by two people taking a walk. The dagger’s excellent state of preservation makes it one of the most valuable discoveries of its kind in Poland. Two pedestrians walking on a beach in Poland unexpectedly came across an ancient and deadly weapon. After finding the 2,500-year-old dagger, individuals named Jacek Ukowski and Katarzyna Herdzik handed it over to the Kamieńska Land Historical Museum.
In a statement made on social media by the museum, it was noted that the recent storms also played a role in the weapon’s discovery. In the post translated from Polish to English by the institution, it stated, “Nature rarely reveals the secrets of the distant past to us. And that is exactly what happened in the Baltic Sea.”
The photos shared by the museum show intricate details on the dagger, such as crescents and crosses resembling stars. The dagger’s exceptional state of preservation elevates it to one of the most valuable discoveries of its kind in Poland.
It is reported that the dagger, with a pointed pommel completing the hilt, features an alternative decoration that extends to its cutting edge. The museum mentioned that their experts are not yet sure what the weapon was used for, but the artifact will undergo extensive examination in the future.
It is also speculated that the surface decorations may be linked to a sun cult and that the dagger may have had ritual significance. Herdzik stated in her museum statement that the discovery was completely unexpected, saying, “I wasn’t expecting to make such a significant discovery, but as soon as I saw this item, I knew it could be valuable.” The Kamieńska Land Historical Museum thanked Herdzik and Ukowski for their “resourcefulness and prompt reactions.”
The museum stated, “Thanks to the immediate reporting made, this extraordinary find was properly secured and stored for future generations.”
