Saudi Arabia Condemns Israel for Cutting Electricity to Gaza

2 Mins Read

Saudi Arabia has condemned Israel’s cutting of electricity to the Gaza Strip in the strongest terms, calling for international mechanisms to ensure accountability. In a statement from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that Saudi Arabia “strongly condemns the practice of wholesale punishment against Palestinians by the occupying Israeli authorities, cutting off electricity supply to the Gaza Strip.” The statement rejected Israel’s violations of international humanitarian law, emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s call on the international community to take urgent measures to immediately, unconditionally, and unrestrictedly provide electricity and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The statement highlighted Israel’s “serious violations” and reiterated its call for international mechanisms to be activated to ensure accountability. Electricity in the Gaza Strip is crucial, especially for purification plants, bakeries, and hospitals. The failure of the seawater desalination plants to operate makes it difficult for the civilian population to access bread and clean water. Israel’s obstruction of the entry of fuel necessary for generators further deepens the humanitarian crisis faced by the two million Gazans living there. Following the end of the first 42-day phase of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas, Israel halted the entry of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip beginning on March 2nd. Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced on March 9th that they had made the decision to immediately cut off electricity supply to the Gaza Strip.
