The European Union has decided to impose sanctions on Iranian airlines. The EU has announced sanctions on certain individuals and entities in Iran, including airlines. The sanctions target those responsible for the transfer of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Iran to Russia, as well as for providing missiles or UAVs to armed groups and entities in the Middle East and the Red Sea region. Accordingly, three Iranian airlines – Saha Airlines, Mahan Air, and Iran Air – along with two supply firms have been added to the sanctions list. Furthermore, sanctions have been imposed on Iran’s Deputy Defense Minister Hamza Kalenderi, prominent figures in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, the Hatem al-Anbiya Headquarters affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Space Unit of the Revolutionary Guard Aerospace Force, the Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company (HESA), and the directors of the Aviation and Space Industries Organization (AIO). The EU’s sanctions regime includes travel bans, asset freezes, and prohibitions on transferring funds to individuals or entities. The EU had expanded the scope of sanctions it imposed on Iran due to its support of Russia in the Ukrainian war, following the attacks carried out by Iran on Israel on April 13, which led to the imposition of further sanctions on May 14.
