Russia: Israel’s Actions in Gaza Contravene International Humanitarian Law and Ethics

3 Mins Read

The Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip are contrary to international humanitarian law and unethical, declaring that “violence against civilians, indiscriminate attacks on crowded places, and civilian infrastructures cannot be justified.” During a weekly press briefing in Moscow, Zakharova evaluated current issues. In response to a question about how the Russian government assessed the bombings of tents in Aqsa Martyrs Hospital compound in the town of Dayr al-Balah, located in the central part of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli army, she described the images as “horrifying” and “shocking.” Emphasizing that the suffering of the Gazan population is unprecedented and destructive, Zakharova expressed condolences to the families of the Palestinians who have been killed in these attacks and wished for a speedy recovery for the injured individuals. Zakharova stressed the importance of halting attacks on Gaza, stating that “violence against civilians, indiscriminate attacks on crowded places, and civilian infrastructures cannot be justified. The actions of (Israeli) soldiers are contrary to international humanitarian law and ethics. The pains of those living in the Gaza Strip can only be alleviated by ceasing military actions.” She highlighted that Russia and several other countries have taken initiatives to improve the situation in Gaza, stating that “along with the cessation of combat operations in Gaza, the Palestinian issue must be resolved within the framework of international law.” Zakharova pointed out that due to the position of the USA and its allies, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has been unable to adopt a clear and sustainable resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. She also mentioned that the attempts by the Americans to encourage indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas have not been successful. Zakharova urged the UNSC to accept resolutions aimed at reducing violence in the region, emphasizing the responsibility of the USA and other UNSC members in preserving global peace and security. Zakharova warned of a significant danger of a large-scale conflict in the Middle East, emphasizing the external power that influences Israel’s military and political leadership, specifically the USA, and its attempts to evade direct responsibility. She criticized Israel’s actions of erasing the Gaza Strip, attacking Palestinian cities in the West Bank, destroying Lebanon, launching attacks on Syria, and threatening Iran, highlighting the USA as the country benefitting the most from Israel’s current activities. Zakharova shared information about the meeting of the “nuclear five” group consisting of Russia, the USA, China, the UK, and France in New York on October 10, conducted at the expert level. She mentioned that Russia handed over the presidency of the “nuclear five” group to China in August, warning that Western countries have created strategic risks that enhance nuclear threats. Zakharova confirmed that Russia will continue to utilize this platform to announce its approach to international security issues and important signals. Additionally, she revealed that the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would attend the South Caucasus Regional Cooperation Platform meeting in Istanbul on October 18 and engage in bilateral discussions during the event.
