According to reports, the amount of fines imposed on Google by Russian courts for removing channels belonging to Russian institutions and individuals from YouTube has exceeded 20 billion dollars. Ivan Morozov, a legal expert speaking to the Russian news agency TASS, stated that administrative fines have been imposed on Google in the country for removing some channels on YouTube. Morozov pointed out that if these fines are not paid within 9 months, the amount doubles every day, stating, “The court cannot cancel this fine, and Google is obliged to pay double the amount every day for not complying with the court’s decision.” An unnamed lawyer involved in the legal process against Google, speaking to the Russian RBK newspaper, also stated that the compensation amount Google is required to pay for 17 Russian TV channels as a result of a court order exceeded 20 billion dollars. Google has recently removed numerous channels owned by Russian institutions and individuals from YouTube, including Russian state channels. The US-based company had initiated bankruptcy proceedings in 2022 for its Russian subsidiary due to its failure to meet financial obligations in Russia. Experts suggest that due to the fines reaching an unpayable level, access to Google services may be restricted in Russia. According to World Bank data, while the size of the global economy in 2023 is approximately 105 trillion dollars, 20 billion dollars represents a figure many times larger than that.
