Rumeysa Ozturk Case in US: Federal Judge Requests Additional Evidence

3 Mins Read

In the United States, the case involving doctoral student Rumeysa Ozturk, who was arrested for supporting Palestine, saw the Federal District Judge requesting both parties to present additional evidence for the continuation of the trial. Judge Sessions in Vermont listened to the arguments of both sides during the initial hearing in Massachusetts after Ozturk was taken into custody there and brought to Louisiana. Ozturk, who had been detained for about two weeks in Louisiana over the weekend, was transferred to Vermont closer to her home region for the first court appearance there. Federal Judge William Sessions, after hearing the attorneys of both parties, pointed out the unusual nature of the content of this case and advised the parties to gather more documents and information. Ozturk’s attorney, Ramzi Kassem, who participated in the hearing via phone, argued for her client’s bail release, stating that she posed no risk of flight or harm to the community. The attorney representing the US government claimed that the case of the Turkish student, whom they allege violated the Immigration and Nationality Act, should not be rushed but rather given due consideration. Judge Sessions listened to the attorneys and requested both parties to submit any additional evidence they gather to the court by April 11, deciding to hold the second hearing on April 14. The federal judge also mentioned that if one party requests it, Rumeysa Ozturk could be asked to make a statement in court. The Arrest of Ozturk: Turkish student Rumeysa Ozturk, who was studying for a doctoral degree at Tufts University in Massachusetts, was taken into custody by 6 masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on the evening of March 25 while she was on her way to have an iftar meal with friends. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Ozturk’s student visa had been revoked, and she would be deported. Rubio stated that more than 300 foreign students, who he described as “supporters of Hamas” and “evidence” (against Israel), had their visas revoked. A federal judge in the US had issued a stay order against the deportation of Turkish student Ozturk by ICE agents. District Judge Denise Casper, after reviewing the petitions from the attorneys late on Friday, April 4, in a report, stated that it was appropriate for Ozturk, held in Louisiana, to be tried in the state of Vermont. Casper cited Ozturk’s attorneys submitting a petition to the court on the night of March 25 while the Turkish student was still being held in Vermont by ICE agents and had not yet been transferred to Louisiana as the reasoning behind her decision.
