As tension continues to escalate in the Middle East, news of a new attack came from Iraq.
It was reported that three rockets were fired at a base where U.S. soldiers are located at Baghdad International Airport. There were no casualties reported.
A security source stated to the AFP news agency, “The Victory Base at Baghdad Airport was targeted with three rockets, two of which were intercepted by the base’s defense systems, while the third fell near the Headquarters of the Counter-Terrorism Service.” Another security source confirmed the report, stating that there were no casualties and the rockets did not affect air traffic. The attack occurred at a time when the region faces the threat of turning into a regional conflict due to the ongoing war in Gaza and Israel’s attacks in Lebanon. Since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7th, armed groups have been targeting U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria due to the military support provided by Washington to Israel. Washington has responded by repeatedly carrying out airstrikes on group headquarters in both countries. The U.S. has around 2,500 American soldiers in Iraq.
As part of the coalition established in 2014 to combat the terrorist organization ISIS, the U.S. has approximately 2,500 troops in Iraq and about 900 in Syria. Other countries such as the U.K. and France also have forces in the coalition. Armed Iraqi groups linked to Iran have demanded the withdrawal of these forces. On Friday, Washington and Baghdad announced that the military mission that the international coalition has been carrying out in Iraq for a decade will end within a year. However, U.S. officials did not disclose how many American troops will remain in Iraq. Following a decrease in attacks in recent months, rockets were fired at the Ayn al-Asad base in western Iraq in August, leaving seven Americans injured. In September, Washington also announced that the U.S. diplomatic complex in Baghdad had been targeted by Iran-backed militias operating in Iraq.
