Amid ongoing uncertainty in the Russia-Ukraine War, Reuters news agency indicated that Turkey could play a significant role in the redefining security architecture of Europe.
According to Reuters, while European countries are working to strengthen their defense structures and provide security guarantees for Ukraine in a likely ceasefire pressured by the U.S., Turkey could be an important partner in the reshaping security architecture of Europe. President Donald Trump’s desire to end the war in Ukraine by reversing the previous U.S. policy and Russia’s abandonment of its isolation policy have alarmed European countries. The tension between Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Trump at the White House has increased pressure on Ukraine and strained relations between the U.S. and Europe. Analysts point out that while Europe works on preserving Ukraine’s military capabilities and security commitments on one hand, they are trying to strengthen their defense capabilities without the U.S. on the other. They mentioned that this situation creates a rare opportunity for Turkey.
“ERDOĞAN, PUTIN, AND ZELENSKY BALANCED RELATIONS”
A senior European diplomat told Reuters that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could balance relations with Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, making it logical to involve Erdoğan in the process. Last week, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that a “sustainable and deterrent” security architecture in Europe could only be achieved through Turkish involvement. Chief of General Staff Metin Gürak also evaluated the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine during discussions with British and French counterparts at a summit in Paris this week that involved general staff chiefs from European countries. The Ministry of National Defense sources also delivered messages to the European Union today. Emphasizing that Turkey is an inseparable part of European security, the sources indicated that Ankara is ready to do its part. Moreover, sources reported that a formal offer from the UK regarding the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets has been received. Sources mentioned that the UK has made an official offer for 40 aircraft and noted that a counteroffer will be made after the conditions have been reviewed.
