The statement issued by the White House provided information about the controversial visit of the US delegation to Greenland. It was emphasized that the visit is limited to the American-owned Pituffik Space Base.
Changes were made regarding the controversial cultural-focused visit to Greenland by the delegation led by Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President James David Vance.
The frame of the planned visit to Greenland, which President Donald Trump wants to include in the country’s territories, has been restricted.
In the statement made by the White House, it was mentioned that the delegation going to Greenland will be led by US Vice President JD Vance, but the delegation will only visit the American-owned Pituffik Space Base and will not attend one of Greenland’s most important events, the dogsled race.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also commented on the issue, stating, “I think it is very positive for the Americans to cancel their visits to the Greenlandic society. Instead, they will visit their own base, Pituffik, and we have nothing against that.”
“I WILL ACCOMPANY MY WIFE DURING THE VISIT” Vice President Vance stated in his announcement, “Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday was so eagerly received that I did not want her to experience all this fun alone. I will also accompany her.”
Vance noted that he would visit the space base to check the island’s security situation, stating, “Because many countries threaten the land and waterways of Greenland, endangering the United States, Canada, and of course the Greenlandic people.”
Vance stated that the Trump administration aims to restore the security of the Greenlandic people and that Denmark has been “ignoring this for a very long time.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated yesterday that Usha Vance’s visit, which includes watching the dogsled race, is part of an unacceptable pressure on Danish territories.
TRUMP WANTS TO ACQUIRE GREENLAND
Donald Trump expressed his desire to purchase Greenland for the first time during his presidency in 2019.
Since he was re-elected as US President, Trump has been stating since January that he wants to annex Greenland to its territories.
Greenland, which has rich natural resources, has been under Danish control for about 300 years, located 3,000 kilometers away. While Greenland has been an autonomous territory since 1953, decisions related to its external and defense policies are made by Copenhagen.
