Responsibility for the Explosion in Greece Claimed by “Urban Guerrilla” Group

2 Mins Read

Greek police announced that the counter-terrorism unit is investigating the explosion last week targeting the railway operator Hellenic Train, carried out by an unidentified “guerrilla group.” The organization referred to as the “Revolutionary Class Self-Defense,” described by Reuters news agency as an “urban guerrilla group,” claimed responsibility for the explosion targeting Hellenic Train in Athens on April 11, as well as another explosion last year. The group stated that these actions were in response to a train accident in the Tempi region of Greece in 2023, where 57 people died.

Although the explosion caused minor damage, no casualties were reported. Police evacuated the area after two media outlets received warning calls regarding the attack. The group named “Revolutionary Class Self-Defense” expressed that their actions were a protest against security concerns and lack of investment in the privatized railways during the debt crisis in Greece from 2009 to 2018. Hellenic Train, a subsidiary of Italy’s Ferrovie dello Stato, operates passenger and freight trains in Greece.

Moreover, the group also claimed responsibility for an attack on the Ministry of Labor in Athens in 2024, dedicating both attacks to the Palestinians in the Gaza war. Greek police spokesperson Constantina Dimoglidou stated in an interview with state channel ERT that the counter-terrorism police are investigating the claims made by the group, suggesting that they may have connections to other previously active groups.
