In the capital of France, Paris, a referendum was held to close and greenify 500 streets and roads. If the proposed offer presented to the referendum by the municipality is accepted, one-tenth of Paris’ streets will be closed to traffic. Parisians went to the polls in Paris for a referendum on the closure and greening of 500 streets and roads. This is the third referendum held since 2023. Parisians voted in 2023 to ban scooters. Last year’s referendum resulted in SUVs having to pay three times the parking fee. Statistics show that with the arrival of socialist mayors in the early 2000s, car traffic in Paris decreased by half. Since taking office in 2014, Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo has made a visible transformation in the city. 84 kilometers of bike lanes have been made since 2020. Bicycle usage has increased by 71% since the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2020, the Paris Municipality had eliminated 10,000 parking spaces. With the closure of 500 streets and roads to traffic, 10,000 parking spaces will be removed. Planting 170,000 trees is planned to replace them. Supporters of the decision argue that closed-off areas are less noisy. Opponents believe that closing roads to traffic will not solve traffic problems. Despite their efforts, green spaces only make up 26% of Paris, while the average in European capitals is 41%.
