Reasons for the Increase in Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the UK

1 Mins Read

In the UK, cases of sexually transmitted diseases have begun to rapidly increase after the pandemic. According to government data, there has been a 7.5% increase in cases of gonorrhea and a 9.4% rise in syphilis.

According to Durex’s Global Sex Survey, only 15% of the population in the United Kingdom purchased condoms in 2023-2024. The World Health Organization also raised concerns about a worrying decrease in the physical contraceptive usage among Generation Z. A survey conducted in 42 countries highlighted that almost one-third of 15-year-olds were not using condoms or birth control pills. Particularly between 2021-2023, the percentage of women using hormonal implants increased from 25% to 55%. However, it was mentioned that hormonal birth control methods do not provide sufficient protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

PROVIDING 98% PROTECTION

Another concerning factor is the widespread use of PrEP, which is protective against HIV. Although this drug is effective in preventing HIV, it does not prevent other sexually transmitted diseases if left untreated. For example, syphilis can lead to serious complications and result in conditions such as heart failure or dementia. The World Health Organization emphasized that correct condom use is 98% effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases.
