The capital of Serbia, Belgrade, saw the streets filled with people once again. However, this time the streets were packed with supporters of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. Approximately 55,000 people attended the rally, including Milorad Dodik, the leader of the Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who is wanted for arrest.
Following the train station disaster that resulted in the death of 15 people in Serbia, the streets of Belgrade came to life once more. But this time, it was the supporters of President Aleksandar Vucic who took the place of government opponents. Participants carried banners and placards to show their support for the government.
55,000 people participated in the rally named “We Will Not Give Up Serbia,” where Vucic stated that those who sought to destabilize Serbia by attempting a “color revolution” had failed. Aleksandar Vucic listed his demands for the continuation of peace and prosperity in Serbia.
Vucic listed his demands as follows: “First, respect for the constitution and laws to ensure the country’s security. Second, those engaging in violent acts during protests must be held criminally responsible. Third, providing education opportunities to all who seek it. Fourth, identifying attacks on state institutions and those assisting them. Fifth, preventing any activities that disrupt the daily lives of the people.” Bosnian Serb Republic leader Milorad Dodik, who is wanted for arrest in Serbia, also attended the rally in the capital.
What sparked the protests? In Novi Sad city, 15 people lost their lives in November last year when the roof of the train station collapsed. Furthermore, the roof had been restored shortly before the accident. Following the disaster, Prime Minister Milos Vucevic announced his resignation on January 28th. If a new government is not formed by April 18th, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is expected to call for general elections.
