Demonstrators gathered in front of the Parliament building in Skopje to protest the nightclub fire, which claimed 59 lives in Northern Macedonia. Following the tragic incident in the eastern town of Kocani where 59 people lost their lives due to a nightclub fire, another demonstration took place in the capital of Skopje. Organized by the group “Who’s Next?”, protesters gathered in front of the Parliament building demanding justice for the victims of the nightclub fire, which resulted in over 170 injuries. The demonstrators expressed their anger towards the government’s inaction and displayed a banner reading “Next in line: the system.” Borjan Eftimov, one of the protesters, stated, “We demand the transparent and complete publication of documents related to the activities of the nightclub that has been operational since 2012.” Igor Antov, another protester emphasizing transparency regarding the nightclub’s license, said, “We propose the establishment of a public service that ensures all inspections in the country are carried out transparently, allowing all citizens to see which facility is subject to inspection and which is not.” Previously, protests were also held on March 18th and March 25th due to the nightclub fire. WHAT HAPPENED? In the nightclub located in Kocani, approximately 100 kilometers away from the capital Skopje, a pyrotechnic material ignited a fire on March 16th at 03:00 local time. The fire resulted in the loss of 59 lives and over 170 injuries. 12 of the injured were transported to Istanbul and Ankara for treatment via ambulance planes sent by Turkey. Investigations after the incident revealed that the nightclub was operating without a license, leading to the initiation of investigations against at least 34 individuals, including former Economy Minister Kreshnik Bekteshi. The Northern Macedonian government announced a 7-day national mourning period following the incident. Additionally, the Mayor of Kocani, Ljupco Papazov, resigned in the aftermath of the tragedy.
