The Duke of Sussex and co-founder of Sentebale, Prince Harry, announced his resignation from the organization due to internal conflicts. Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, resigned from the African aid organization Sentebale that he founded 20 years ago, citing disagreements within the organization. He expressed being in “shock” and feeling “truly heartbroken” following the decision to step down after clashes that arose internally. Prince Harry and his co-founder for Lesotho, Prince Seeiso, announced their resignation from leadership roles following a dispute with Dr. Sophie Chandauka, the chair of the board of trustees. The board had requested Chandauka’s resignation in 2023, which then turned into a legal process. Founded in memory of his mother, Princess Diana, Prince Harry established Sentebale in Lesotho in 2006 to support children fighting poverty and living with HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. The disagreements at the core of the conflict, as reported by the Times, revolve around differing views on the allocation of aid funds primarily focusing on Africa. The board of trustees sought Chandauka’s resignation based on the organization’s interests, leading to further complications when she contested the request legally. In a joint statement, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso expressed, “The board of trustees was compelled to request the chair’s resignation with staff welfare in mind. In response, the chair pursued legal avenues to remain in this voluntary position, heightening the already fractured relationship.” The statement further noted, “The situation is unprecedented. We are shocked to be in this position but have an ongoing responsibility to Sentebale beneficiaries. As a result, we will address our concerns with the Charity Commission.” Former board members Timothy Boucher, Mark Dyer, Audrey Kgosidintsi, Kelello Lerotholi, and Damian West unanimously resigned from the board, citing a loss of trust and faith in the chair. The statement released highlighted, “Due to the loss of trust and faith in the board chair, we see no alternative way forward.” Chandauka, in her statement, emphasized, “Everything I have done at Sentebale is to protect the organization’s integrity and the interests of the young people we serve. My actions have been guided by principles of justice and equal treatment.” She also remarked, “There are individuals in this world who act as if they are above the law and mistreat others, only to then take on the role of a victim and distort the truth through media manipulation.” An announcement regarding Sentebale’s future governance structure and upcoming steps is anticipated to be made on March 25, 2025.
