In Japan, it is expected that Ishiba Shigeru, who was elected as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), will assume the position of prime minister, as Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his cabinet have submitted their resignations. According to the state television NHK, before Ishiba takes office, Kishida Fumio and his current cabinet, who have been in office since October 2021, collectively stepped down. Kishida, speaking at a press conference, stated that during his three-year tenure, Japan was facing “a turning point.” He noted that there were “unavoidable challenges in economic, social, and diplomatic areas” and reported that they made steady progress in their efforts to turn change into strength. Ishiba’s cabinet is expected to take office following the assumption of prime ministerial duties in a joint session of the LDP-dominated parliament and its coalition partner, Komeito. After the parliamentary vote, the announcement of the cabinet and the start of the new cabinet are expected to take place with a ceremony at the Imperial Palace. Following the resignation of former Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide after a one-year term from 2020 to 2021, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, who took office in October 2021, decided not to participate in the recent LDP elections. LDP leader and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio had announced in August that he would resign due to the scandal involving a political donation fund within the party that had undermined public trust in politics. In a congress on September 27 with 9 candidates, former LDP Secretary-General Ishiba Shigeru, who had previously served as Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Defense, won in the second round of the presidential election.
