Plum harvest, which started under cover in Mersin, an important agricultural production center in Turkey, continues. The price of 1 kilogram of plums being harvested in greenhouses in Mut and Silifke districts has decreased from 8,000 TL to 400 TL. Plums collected by agricultural workers from the branches are sorted into packages according to their sizes with the help of machines. Afterwards, the plums, finding buyers for prices ranging from 800 to 400 TL, are delivered to traders in the Keben neighborhood and sent both to the domestic market and for export. It was mentioned that plums, especially demanded by countries like Dubai, Qatar, Canada, the UK, and Germany abroad. Agricultural Engineer Mustafa Kucur stated, “Our plums are currently sold for prices around 400-600-800 liras depending on their quality. We are currently sending the harvested product to both export and the domestic market. There are about 3,000 acres of plum orchards in the Göksu Valley, but this year the yield is very low, about one-third to one-fourth. The yield decreased due to climatic reasons, cold weather, and birds excessively consuming the flowers that would become fruit.” Volkan Sümbül, who produces in a 5-acre greenhouse, also stated that they started the harvest under cover and are pleased with the price. Sümbül also mentioned that the harvest will continue for about a month more. “We closed our greenhouses in the first week of January. The winter conditions were a bit unfavorable. January was very warm and spring-like. In February, we experienced very cold weather during the flowering period. We had to constantly heat the inside of the greenhouse by burning stoves. This year, a lot of birds came to the region, causing significant damage by eating the blossoming flowers. Today, we completed our first harvest and sold the plums for prices ranging from 400 to 600 to 800 liras depending on their size. If exports continue this way, the producers will be happy,” he said. Sümbül stated that he aims to obtain 12 tons of produce from his 5-acre production under cover and complete the harvest by mid-April.
