Preparations for Retaliation from Europe to the USA in the Automotive Sector

2 Mins Read

The European Union is preparing measures against the new tariffs imposed by the USA on imported cars. The European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill stated during a daily press briefing in Brussels that they are ready to protect their economic interests. He emphasized that if the USA imposes any unfair measures that create a negative impact, Europe will respond strongly, proportionately, powerfully, well-calibrated, and in a timely manner. Gill highlighted that their priority is to resolve the issue through negotiations and that they want to build, not destroy, the relationship between the EU and the USA. He stated that the measures announced by the USA are completely erroneous. Gill pointed out that the USA has already started imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, to which Europe has responded effectively. He mentioned that they have received the announcement regarding cars from the USA at this stage, and next week a new series of reciprocal tariffs will come into effect. Gill expressed disappointment but also readiness to counter these measures. He emphasized that the EU will take all necessary steps to protect their common market, industry, and companies. President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday to impose a 25% tariff on imported cars and trucks to increase domestic production. The new customs tariffs are expected to be implemented on April 2nd.
