A fire broke out in a transformer supplying electricity to Heathrow Airport in the capital city of London, UK. Due to the fire and ensuing power outage, the airport was closed until midnight tonight.
In London, the capital of the UK, the airport was left without electricity due to a fire in a transformer. As a result, all flights were cancelled throughout the day.
An announcement from the airport stated that following a fire in an electrical transformer center supplying the airport, resulting in a “significant power outage,” the airport would remain closed until midnight today. Passengers were advised not to travel to the airport and the statement highlighted, “To ensure the safety of our customers and colleagues, Heathrow will remain closed until 23.59 on 21st March.” The closure of Heathrow Airport occurred following a fire at an electricity transformer center in west London, leaving many houses without power.
Eurocontrol, the company overseeing air traffic control in Europe, announced that flights destined for Heathrow were being diverted to surrounding cities. Heathrow is the world’s second busiest airport after Dubai, as of last year.
