A partnership agreement in unmanned technologies has been signed between Baykar, the leading unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturer in Turkey, and Leonardo, one of Europe’s largest defense companies. With this agreement, Baykar aims to strengthen its position in the European market, while Leonardo is expected to begin producing both aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. Baykar maintains its position as the world’s largest exporter of unmanned aerial vehicles, achieving global success in 2024 by generating 90% of its revenue from exports, totaling $1.8 billion. Leonardo is involved in developing a new generation combat aircraft under the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), alongside British BAE Systems and Japanese JAIEC. Baykar had recently acquired the Italian aviation giant Piaggio Aerospace, with plans to expand employment at Piaggio’s Italian facilities. Stefano Pontecorvo, the president of Italy’s leading aerospace and defense company Leonardo, praised Baykar during his visit to Baykar’s production center in Istanbul in February, emphasizing the rapid progress of the collaboration process. Leonardo and Baykar’s technologies complement each other strongly, with Pontecorvo expressing optimism about potential collaboration with Piaggio Aerospace, stating that if successful, it would be a return to the magnificent region.
