In Greece, 3 people have lost their lives in the past week due to the West Nile virus. Cases have been mostly reported in Larissa, Lefkada, Preveza, Halkidiki, Pella, Pieria, Serres, Rodopi, Drama, Evros, Xanthi, Kavala, Thasos, and Athens.
According to a statement from the Greek National Public Health Organization (EODY), 12 new cases of the West Nile virus have been identified in the country in the past week. The statement mentioned that 3 people have died due to the virus in the last week. The statement indicated that the number of West Nile virus cases detected in the country since the beginning of the year has risen to 192, with a possibility of an increase in cases. The statement also noted that cases have been mostly observed in Larissa, Lefkada, Preveza, Halkidiki, Pella, Pieria, Serres, Rodopi, Drama, Evros, Xanthi, Kavala, Thasos, and Athens.
HOW IS WEST NILE VIRUS TRANSMITTED?
The disease does not spread directly from person to person. The virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, causing a viral disease.
SYMPTOMS OF WEST NILE VIRUS
The incubation period of West Nile Virus infection is 3-14 days. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, skin rash, muscle tremors and spasms, drowsiness, coma, and rarely, death. Neurological disease and death are more common in elderly patients.
