The director of “No Other Land,” which won the Best Documentary Oscar and highlighted the events in the West Bank that marked the 2025 Oscar Awards, Hamdan Ballal, was arrested by the Israeli army. The Palestinian director Hamdan Ballal, who was attacked by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, was detained by the Israeli army. The Palestinian assistant director of the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land,” Hamdan Ballal, was attacked by masked settlers in the Masafer Yatta area south of Hebron. Witnesses reported that a group of about 15 armed settlers surrounded Ballal’s house and launched an attack. They started throwing stones at Palestinians and damaged a water tank near Hamdan’s house,” the statement said. Eyewitnesses stated that Israeli soldiers did not intervene in the incident but instead pursued Ballal to his house and arrested him. Raviv, a witness, told The Guardian, “The settlers smashed his car with stones and slashed its tires. All windows and the windshield were shattered.” Bloodstains on the ground after the attack were documented, with Ballal suffering injuries from blows to his head. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that “Palestinian terrorists threw stones at Israeli citizens.” The IDF statement said, “Three Palestinian suspects who threw stones at security forces and an Israeli civilian were arrested.” Basel Adra, one of the four directors of the film in Israel and Palestine, pointed out that the attack followed the international success of the film. Adra stated, “Perhaps this attack is a revenge for the film and the Oscar.” Describing the events as “horrifying,” Adra said, “Soldiers and settlers acted together. The police did not intervene. Shots were fired into the air to prevent those trying to protect Hamdan.” The Israeli director Yuval Abraham, in a post on the social media platform X, said, “A group of settlers lynched Hamdan Ballal. He has wounds on his head and stomach. Instead of putting him in an ambulance, the soldiers arrested him. There has been no news from him since then.” This is not the first time the directors of “No Other Land” have been targeted. Last February, Basel Adra was attacked by masked Israeli settlers. The Israeli Minister of Culture regarded the documentary’s Oscar win as “a sad moment for the cinema world.”
