In the Irşen Küçük Middle School in the capital of Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic (KKTC), a student wearing a headscarf was not allowed to enter, according to the student’s mother Nazlı Şimşek, who stated that their ordeal was similar to what happened during the February 28 period. In Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic, a veiled student was prevented from entering the school. Nazlı Şimşek, the student’s mother, shared their experience. Şimşek said, “Unfortunately, it’s the year 2025 and we’re experiencing February 28th. My child was treated separately from us. We were subjected to various slanders.” she said. In the capital of Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic, a eighth grade student, a girl, was not admitted to school due to her headscarf. The incident came to light with images shared on social media. In the images, it was seen that the student’s entry to the school was blocked. Yusuf İnanıroğlu, the Director of the Ministry of National Education General Secondary Education Department, stated that the student should be admitted to the school, but this request was rejected by the school administration. Nazlı Şimşek, the girl’s mother, shared their experience. Mother Şimşek pointed out that what they experienced was similar to the headscarf injustice during the 28th of February period, saying: “Unfortunately, it’s the year 2025 and we’re experiencing February 28th. My child was treated separately from us. We were subjected to various slanders. We were accused of forcing headscarf on our child. How could such a thing be possible? My daughter covered herself by her own will. My child is missing out on education, and those responsible are the teachers’ union. If educators care so much about my child’s education, they should let her go to school.” “IT’S AGAINST SCHOOL RULES TO COME LIKE THIS” Şimşek, who explained that her daughter wore headscarf of her own will and went to school in this way after the mid-term break, said that a few days later the school administration warned her daughter, “It’s prohibited to come like this, it’s against school rules,” and then they were called to the school. Şimşek, after negotiating with the school administration, said the administration was convinced that her daughter should come to school with a headscarf covering her head, but four days later, her daughter was cornered. “I had told them that my daughter had eye pressure and shouldn’t cry. My daughter came home crying that day. I called the school. They said they were thinking about my daughter’s well-being. Later, they said, ‘We care about the child’s well-being, we think about the child’s schooling life, health, and psychology.’ She said. Şimşek said that they later learned that the school administration had initiated disciplinary proceedings against her daughter for continuing to go to school with the same headscarf, and that it was recommended that her daughter, who wanted to receive graphic design education, go to Hala Sultan Theology College, but her daughter loved her school and didn’t want to leave. “SHE HASN’T BEEN ABLE TO GO TO SCHOOL FOR THREE WEEKS” Mother Şimşek also said that her daughter hasn’t been able to go to school for three weeks. Şimşek said that they have experienced very difficult things psychologically and that they are practically experiencing February 28th in 2025, stating, “My daughter’s will is very strong. Her will keeps us standing. Thanks to her, we can stand, thank God.”
