New Era in Natural Gas: Higher Bills for Heavy Consumers

2 Mins Read

A gradual billing system is being implemented in natural gas bills. In the new era, heavy consumers will pay higher bills. Tariffs will be applied according to the climate conditions of each city. Following electricity, a gradual billing system is also planned for natural gas. Consumption and the region’s climate will be determinative in the new era of natural gas bills. Different tariffs will be applied in Antalya, which has warmer winters, and Erzurum, where harsh winters are experienced. According to a report in Milliyet Newspaper, Ali Rıza Öner, the President of the Waste Management and Energy Production from Waste Association (TAYED), explained that Hakkari and Erzurum consume the most natural gas in Turkey, while Adana and Osmaniye consume the least. Öner noted that the ministry aims to avoid causing inconvenience to citizens by determining separate tiers for each province and making distinctions for provinces with cold and hot climates.
MOST NATURAL GAS CONSUMING PROVINCES
Öner also revealed the provinces with the highest and lowest natural gas consumption. According to 2023 data, the province with the highest average natural gas consumption per household was Hakkari with 1401 cubic meters. It was followed by Erzurum with 1348, Ardahan with 1317, Muş with 1311, and Ağrı with 1224 cubic meters. The lowest consumption occurred in Adana with 521 cubic meters, Osmaniye with 527, Mersin with 531, and Antalya with 566 cubic meters. In Istanbul, households consumed an average of 869 cubic meters per year, 1067 in Ankara, and 736 in Izmir.
REAL COSTS TO BE REFLECTED
Öner emphasized that average consumption will determine the bills. Öner stated that those consuming below the average would be supported, while those exceeding the average would have the actual costs reflected in their bills.
HEAVY ELECTRICITY USERS PAYING MORE
A new era in electricity bills started on February 1st. Accordingly, real costs were reflected in the bills of those consuming 417 kilowatt-hours of electricity or more per month. It was announced that the regulation would affect 1.2 million subscribers. Bills of those using electricity above the average saw an increase of nearly 100%.
